Thirty years ago — 1993

Winners in the recent grand opening of the new P&G Foods Hometown Market, located at 411 Central Ave., Dunkirk are Agnes Cecala ä Murray 26-inch 15-speed bicycle; Ron Majecki and son Adam ä Shurfine wagon full of Shurfine groceries; and a Stell Oliver train set. The prize drawings concluded a weeklong celebration of the new grocery store owned by Gary Damico.

Forty years ago — 1983

Earlier this month, Danuta Walesa met with Norwegian King Olav II, a few hours before receiving the 1983 Nobel peace prize on behalf of her husband, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa. Walesa stayed behind in Poland for fear of not being allowed back into his homeland if he attended the ceremony himself.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Robert J. Briggs, exalted ruler of Dunkirk Elks Lodge 922, announced Joseph Raczek of Dunkirk and Roberta Burgstrom of Fredonia as first place winners of the annual Elks Leadership Contest.
