Thirty years ago — 1994

The popularity of line dancing and country music has reached the local area. Line dancing lessons are enjoyed by a crowd of participants every Wednesday at the Dunkirk Senior Citizens Center on Ruggles Street. Lessons are taught by Judy Mroczka and Jean Sutton and have been ongoing for several weeks as the seniors and others do “the achy breaky” and the “boot scootin’ boogie.”

Forty years ago — 1984

Attorney Michael B. Bluth has relocated his general law practice to 310 Central Ave., Dunkirk. In addition, he serves as the New York State estate tax attorney for Chautauqua County. Mr. Bluth served as city attorney of Dunkirk from 1980-1981. He was awarded his law degree from New York Law School and formerly practiced in Buffalo and Jamestown. A SUNY Fredonia graduate, he was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, “The Leader” while a student there.

Fifty years ago — 1974

Randolph A. Hearst announced he will provide $2 million to the Symbionese Liberation Army for the negotiation of his 19-year-old daughter, Patricia Hearst’s freedom. It is the largest kidnapping payment ever made in America.
