Thirty years ago – 1994

Hope continues to grow that the owners of an old ship sunk in the deepest part of Lake Erie will soon receive permission from the Canadian government to raise the vessel and move it to the city of Dunkirk. Capt. Steve Morgan, president of the Mar-Dive Corp., plans to raise the Steamship “Atlantic” from its resting spot off Long Point in Canadian waters and move it to an underwater museum site off Dunkirk’s Cedar Beach. Morgan said the support of the citizens of Dunkirk was the main reason it was selected for the museum site.

Forty years ago – 1984

The Murraymen Drum and Bugle Corps of Murray Hose Co. No. 4 in Dunkirk recently received an invitation to participate in the Fourth of July celebration in Atlanta, Ga. The corps was selected as one of the 18 musical units throughout the country to participate in the event, which is considered as the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country. The annual parade is viewed by more than 300,000 spectators. This year’s Salute to America Parade Grand Marshal is Paul Newman.

Fifty years ago – 1974

The city of Dunkirk announced it will seek permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make temporary repairs to the submerged inner breakwall in Dunkirk Harbor.
