Retrospective

Thirty years ago — 1994

Students in Lisa Forbes’ second-grade classroom at School 3 in Dunkirk won the READAmerica Classroom Project and received a computer recently at Midway Park in Maple Springs. Among the students who traveled to Maple Springs with Ms. Forbes were Alexis Carreras, Jeremy Raynor, Jillian Campbell and Jason Luszcak. More than 50 classrooms of students entered the program and pledged to do extra reading through the summer.

Forty years ago — 1984

It was both a happy and sad occasion on July 1 when more than 200 members of St. Hyacinth Parish and children from the parish school gathered for a special farewell Mass and a dinner-dance honoring Sister M. Anthonille, CSSF. Sr. Anthonille has been school principal for the past six years. A most touching moment that brought tears to her eyes of the honored nun was the presentation of long-stemmed red and white roses by 36 schoolchildren. On behalf of the city of Dunkirk, Mayor Edwin Gregoreski presented Sr. Anthonille with a proclamation and a key to the city.

Fifty years ago — 1974

The 95th annual season opened June 28 at Lily Dale, the world’s largest spiritual center. Robert Sabol, assembly president, officiated at the opening ceremonies.
