Thirty years ago — 1994
The Chautauqua County Legislature recently approved a resolution “encouraging the use of protective bicycle helmets” after refusing to make such use mandatory for all ages. State law requires that children under 14 wear the headgear. A bicycle helmet education program will be instituted with the expectation that local fraternal, business and civic organizations will sponsor such programs and supply helmets for riders over the age of 14 if they are unable to buy their own.
Forty years ago — 1984
Officials at the M. Wile and Co. plant in Dunkirk announced a major expansion and modernization program that will mean 110 new jobs over the next four to six months. President and CEO Homi Patel noted that the company selected Dunkirk over various other locations, including a North Carolina facility, in part because 94 percent of the local plant’s 218 employees recently voted to accept a cash bonus or company stock in return for a 50-cent per hour wage reduction. The company, in turn, agreed to transfer all pant and vest production from a plant in North Carolina to Dunkirk.
