THIRTY YEARS AGO – 1994 Kim M. Ruska, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Ruska, has been granted a five-year residency in pathology at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She will begin her residency upon her May 1994 graduation from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. TWENTY YEARS AGO – 1994 New York’s beer and soda industry retained $69.2 million in unclaimed bottle and can deposits over a year period. Gov. Mario Cuomo, who is fighting to retrieve those deposits for New York, said the money should instead be going to fund state environmental and parks projects. Cuomo has been trying unsuccessfully to convince the Legislature to direct the unclaimed deposits to the state for a decade. Thirty years ago — 1994 Waste generated from out-of-county sources continues to “contribute significantly to the overall financial success” of the Chautauqua County landfill. Solid Waste Director Richard Johnson today issued a report for January which shows that the pattern of operating in the black is continuing from1993. The landfill showed a net profit of $64,742 in January despite a loss of $679 on recycling operations. Total out-of-county waste buried in January generated $69,583, or 17 percent of total revenue. Thirty years ago - 1994 Michael Davis of Laguna Hills, Calif., formerly of Dunkirk, and winner of $1,000 in a recent line-dancing contest, will appear in a line-dancing scene in an upcoming “Murder She Wrote” starring Angela Lansbury. A physical therapist by profession, Michael just happened to be in the area when the TV show was being filmed.
