Thirty years ago — 1994 Chautauqua Day Care Center will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and continues to update and create new programs to better accommodate the needs of parents seeking day care for their children. Forty years ago — 1984 Local ice skating used to be an outdoor sport which depended on the cooperation of the weather. Now, thanks to the Fredonia State field house, it has become an indoor sport with many local participants. Joining the locals on the ice recently were two Buffalo Jills cheerleaders—Shannon Nagurney skated with Jeff Pagano while Fran Casale and Andy Reed made a second attractive pair. On Feb. 20, while paternal grandmother Mrs. Joseph Farrell of Harrysbourg was hosting a baby shower in their honor, Barbara Farrell and daughter Alexandria Marie (born Feb. 19) were resting at Westfield Hospital. So new father James “Jimmy” Farrell of Dunkirk, after visiting with his family, traveled back to Dunkirk to serve as proxy guest of honor at the festivities. Forty years ago — 1984 Traci Hopkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Hopkins of Irving, has been named Student of the Week at Silver Creek High School. A senior, she is a member of the National Honor Society and was a commended student in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. An accomplished percussionist in the high school band, Traci has received top marks in musical competition. Mario Cuomo presented the ninth annual Governor’s Productivity Awards to seven state employees for their exemplary achievement in improving state services, increasing productivity and saving taxpayers’ money. Timothy M. Byrne of Gowanda, a maintenance assistant with the Division for Youth at the Great Valley Residential Facility, placed first among nearly 200 employees who were nominated by their peers.
