Thirty years ago — 1993 His book won’t win him a Pulitzer Prize, but it does prove that Richard “Dick” Mekus is a man with a heart, a man who values friends, and a man with an enduring interest in writing. Stricken with cerebral palsy since birth over 40 years ago, Dick had one goal — to write a book. He recently completed a book entitled “Chad,” a story about Chad Shaw, 5-year-old son of Alan and Karen Shaw, his nearby neighbors on East Green Street. Dick and the Shaw family are good friends. Thirty years ago — 1993 Fredonia firefighters responded to two lightning strikes during a recent early morning storm. The first strike hit the James Nosek residence on Berry Road and caused minor damage to the living room. The second lightning strike resulted in fire at the Philip Lord residence on Van Buren Road. There were no injuries, but the fire caused minor damage to the living room floor and furniture. Thirty years ago — 1993 A total of 100 fire companies from four counties have registered for the 85th annual Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen’s convention to be held in Westfield Aug. 4-7. The event, which is open to the public, is being hosted by the Westfield Fire Department. Recent Westfield High School graduate Eric Roggenbaum was presented with a golf shirt, baseball cap and U.S. savings bond for designing the winning logo for this year’s convention. Thirty years ago — 1993 The Chautauqua County Home in the west town of Dunkirk ended 1992 with a net profit of $186,393. The home had 1992 revenues of $8,486,155 and spent $8,299.759. An informal survey by the home staff showed that the Chautauqua County Home was likely the only countyoperated nursing home in the region to end 1992 in the black. It is estimated that across New York state, 60 to 70 percent of all county-operated nursing homes ended 1992 with operating deficits.
