Thirty years ago — 1993 Three first-grade teachers at Brocton Central School pleaded with the school board to hire another teacher for their grade level. At this time, the total enrollment for the first-grade classes, including the pre-first section, is 81. The teachers pointed out that there were proven benefits for children at this grade level who are part of classes which contain no more than 18 students. Thirty years ago — 1993 About 300 people attended the recent 30th anniversary celebration at Bill’s Gun & Saddle Shop in Sinclairville which also featured the Grand Opening of Bill’s “Old West Saddle Shop.” Special events for the two days included a quick draw exhibition by Butch Cassidy and Black Bart (aka Leroy Parker and Jeff Carnes) plus rope spinning by Mark Swanson and owner Bill Frost. Thirty years ago — 1993 St. Hedwig’s Parish in Dunkirk was established in 1902 and one year later the parish Holy Rosary Society was founded. On Sunday, June 6, a 90th anniversary celebration took place. The goal of the society, which was organized for the women of the church, was to motivate devotion to the Blessed Mother. For many years, the minutes of each meeting were written in Polish. Dues were 10 cents per month and that rate remained until 1992, when they were increased to 25 cents per month. Thirty years ago — 1993 The village of Fredonia has been chosen as the first stop on this year’s “Tour de LaFrance.” The traveling show of authentically restored American LaFrance fire fighting equipment rolls into town this weekend. On display will be 12 pieces of fire fighting equipment which have all been restored to their original condition. The tour will also include a showing of American LaFrance’s newest fire truck, the Patriot. In all, the event will display 160 years of American LaFrance equipment.
