Pomfret: Wait again on a reval
Pomfret is far behind the times when it comes to assessments.
Its last assessment was done in 1974, which means homes currently valued at $150,000 are assessed at $30,000. That estimate is based on a 20 percent equalization rate.
At its meeting tonight, the Town Board may decide to do a reassessment of properties in the 2015 budget. The price tag of that project – about $450,000.
One of the leading advocates for the effort is Ann Eckman, who believes that after 40 years, some residents are not paying a proper share of taxes. “There is something wrong,” she said recently. “There are neighborhoods that are carrying an unfair burden.”
No one will dispute her concerns, but 2015 may not be the best year to move ahead.
Already, the local economy is facing a bumpy future. Home values are stagnant at best and many are on the market.
Besides the glut of homes, there is a concern of the loss of 400 jobs in the coming months. That could have a negative impact on the assessments as well.
That being said, $450,000 is a large expense to budget in an uncertain year. The Town Board may be wise to wait and see before going forward with a revaluation of homes.
