Buffalo Bills: Change amid a status quo

Will today usher a new era and attitude for the Buffalo Bills?

Later today, Rex Ryan will be officially announced as head coach for the Bills. Some are thrilled with the announcement, others are pessimistic.

In reality, there has been no coach with this big a name since Wade Phillips succeeded Marv Levy. Phillips took the Bills to the playoffs twice before a power struggle with the front office in 2000.

The next 15 years have brought chaos and constant change, except for one name: Russ Brandon, current team president and chief executive officer.

He has managed to maintain his employment through years of ineptitude by the team, even rising to leadership levels. All this while seven coaches have either quit or been let go.

Ryan is a leader. Some others, still with the team’s management, do not have that ability.
