PROPOSAL Budget needs some cutting

Republicans in Congress are being criticized by some for a budget proposal that makes relatively modest cuts in federal spending.

In response, Democrats in the House of Representatives have introduced a budget bill almost identical to what President Barack Obama proposes. It makes virtually no cuts in spending.

Under the Democrat lawmakers’ plan, the government would spend about $3.7 trillion next year. That works out to more than $11,000 for every man, woman and child in the United States.

Both Obama and his backers in the House would fund the government with $1.8 trillion in tax increases during the next decade.

But even that would not balance the budget. The plan also includes $6 trillion in deficit spending during the next 10 years.

The national debt already stands at $18.1 trillion. It takes only about four minutes to add $1 million to the total.

Details of Republicans’ plan for a modicum of spending discipline certainly can be debated. But what cannot be argued reasonably is whether something needs to be done to limit spending and taxes.

Incredible as it seems, Obama and his cronies in Congress insist there is no reason for such control.
