The OBSERVER’s View

Contrary to what some commentators are saying, Islamic State terrorists’ conquests of the Iraqi city of Ramadi do not raise questions about U.S. strategy to defeat the vicious group. They merely emphasize that a worry present for many months is growing.

Many Iraqi troops abandoned weapons, including tanks and other heavy armaments, and fled rather than fight Islamic State forces at Ramadi. The same thing has happened several times in clashes with government soldiers.

It needs to be kept in mind Ramadi is not some small town, but a city roughly the size of Pittsburgh. It was abandoned without much of a fight.

The same thing happened in Mosul, at about 1.6 million people the biggest city in northern Iraq. The Islamic State has held it since last June.

President Barack Obama and military officials need to re-examine U.S. efforts against the terrorists. Clearly, they are winning in Iraq – despite the fact Ramadi’s loss has been termed only a “setback.”

Americans with good memories may recall hearing the term many years ago – during the Vietnam War.
