Senior housing not the answer

Does Dunkirk need more senior housing on its waterfront? Probably not, but how can we really tell.

Once again, the city of Dunkirk has shown it has no vision for the future. Ask its council, mayor or the often absent development department: where does Dunkirk want to be in five or 10 years?

There is usually a shrug of the shoulders or no answer.

Is it aiming to be a destination for senior citizens? Maybe. The most recent project to come to light, according to documents obtained by the OBSERVER, for the lakefront property at 66 to 80 Lake Shore Drive is a senior housing initiative.

If it was part of a larger plan, that might be fine. If it is part of a panic plan by the current administration, then it is something city leaders need to reconsider.

Thankfully, the Local Development Corp. plan was defeated by Common Council in June. That land has sat vacant for 26 years. There needs to be, especially at this time, no rush to fill it with a poor choice.
