Basketball: Bad bounce for Brocton

Study after study shows that students who participate in extracurricular activities generally have better grades, are more focused and are more likely to succeed in life. That’s true with music, theater, clubs and of course, sports.

That’s why it was so disheartening to hear that Brocton Central School will not be able to hit the hardwood for its girls varsity or junior varsity basketball teams this year.

School Superintendent Jason Delcamp announced at the school board meeting that not only were they unsuccessful at putting together a team, they couldn’t get the few students interested to join a neighboring school district.

The reality is our population is dropping. Football has found a way, having two and even three schools merge together to field a team. Locally, Dunkirk and Fredonia are the only schools that have enough students for their own team.

That’s why once again we believe mergers are the key. Ripley doesn’t have enough students for its basketball teams. But those students are now attending Chautauqua Lake through a tuitioning program, so they’re getting the opportunity to play.

Brocton was unsuccessful in merging with Westfield Academy and Central School and rejected merging with Fredonia. Maybe Brocton should look into the possibility of tuitioning its students to Chautauqua Lake as well.

They need to do something. The status quo isn’t working.
