Highs and lows: Some of the best, worst of the week
Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:
BEST
POLAR BEAR PLUNGE — Let’s face it; last weekend was COLD! We had highs of only 13 degrees on Sunday. But that didn’t stop more than 60 brave souls to jump in Lake Erie for the annual Polar Bear Swim in Silver Creek. Proceeds benefited the Women and Children’s Hospital, the Sunset Bay Fire Department, the Silver Creek Fire Department, the Silver Creek Rescue Squad and the Silver Creek Food Pantry. It was a heck of a day for a swim. We also want to applaud members of the Silver Creek and Sunset Bay fire departments and rescue squads who got in the water to ensure everyone’s safety.
3 KINGS CELEBRATION — A lot of times people think of New Year’s Day as the final celebration for the winter holidays. But that dismisses Three Kings Day, celebrating when the Magi visited baby Jesus. It’s an especially popular holiday in Puerto Rico, which is why Dunkirk Mayor Willie Rosas wanted to make sure it was celebrated locally. This year was the first year the city had a formal celebration of Three Kings Day. We hope it grows even bigger next year.
FREDONIA SCHOOL CHANGES — The Fredonia Central School is losing two good administrators. Superintendent Paul DiFonzo is retiring as of March 31 and assistant high school principal Scot Stutzman is leaving for the Cassadaga Valley Central School to become its new high school principal. Change is always hard. We wish both DiFonzo and Stutzman the best for the next chapter in their lives. Good luck to them both.
WORST
WACKY WEATHER — Last weekend it was extremely cold. Then in the middle of the week, high winds were creating havoc. By the end of the week, temperatures went up and all our snow melted. The snowmobile trails have been closed due to poor trail conditions. This poor weather is hurting our area’s winter tourism opportunities. But when you see some of the flooding out west or the predicted ice storms in Kansas City, unexpected melted snow isn’t so bad.
