HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week
Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:
BEST
SPECIAL ATHLETES — Once again, SUNY Fredonia was the site of the annual Special Olympics. Hundreds of students were there, participating in the various events. Maureen Bialaszewski has been organizing the event for 29 years. It’s a lot of work, but pays dividends in the hearts and minds of children.
TRAILS ARE OPEN — We love the snowmobile trails in the winter. Now there’s a new series of trails for hikers and those on horseback. The Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System held its grand opening, with more than 20 miles of trails running from Charlotte to Cherry Creek. This is a great opportunity for local residents as well as a tourist destination for visitors.
MACKERVILLE — After a short absence, the 3-on-3 Gus Macker tournament has returned to Chautauqua County. Good luck to all those participating. It’s not too late to register if you haven’t. Registration takes place from 7 a.m. to noon today. The event runs today and Sunday. If you know of anyone playing, get to Jamestown and cheer them on! And even if you don’t know of anyone playing, it still can be a lot of fun to watch local residents try their skills at basketball.
WORST
WRONG ROUTE — Just how did a sedan driving 30 mph end up in Dunkirk’s Memorial Day parade? The driver, who was not identified, caused chaos and fear among those in attendance. We’re just thankful no one got hurt. Memorial Day is a day we remember those who died for our country. We don’t want to see people hurt or killed attending remembrance ceremonies.
