HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week
Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:
BEST
CLEANING UP DUNKIRK — We want to applaud this year’s senior class at Dunkirk High School. The seniors continued the tradition of spending a day cleaning up the city at the end of the school year, as part of Senior Sweep. This year the Sweep targeted the parks. This is good for the community to see it cleaned up and it gives residents a positive look for graduating high school students. May this tradition continue for years to come.
ASQUITH GYM — The Cassadaga Valley Central School has been around for more than 75 years. The gym has a new name “Asquith Gymnasium.” Art Asquith was a popular physical education teacher and coach for many years. Last weekend, the community came together to salute Asquith. Many of those in attendance had Asquith as a teacher and/or coach. Now his name will always be remembered at CVCS.
SUCCESSFUL SWIM — Congratulations to SUNY Fredonia professor Sherri Mason. Earlier this week she completed a 15.5 mile swim on Chautauqua Lake. Mason is a Great Lakes researcher and did the swim in preparation to swim across Lake Erie. Her goal is not just for physical accomplishments. She also wants to bring attention to pollution in Lake Erie. We congratulate her on both items.
WORST
VANDALISM CONTINUES — We’ve written about this before, but it’s worth repeating. Vandalism is a pointless crime. You’re not stealing out of need. You’re not fighting out of revenge. Why is it that vandalism continues? Some individuals continue to vandalize the Collins Center Town Park. A drinking fountain was knocked over three times in April. Now vandals have damaged a concrete drinking fountain and electrical outlets’ weatherization covers. There is an active police investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 532-4874.
