Fredonia spurs town increase

What choice did the town of Pomfret really have when it came to water and sewer fees? Despite some opposition by Town Board members John Sedota and Christopher Schaeffer, the board approved a hike.

Sedota and Schaeffer have a point, but Pomfret is at the mercy of Fredonia, which provides water to portions of the town. Trustees in the village already levied a hike on their users of 31.5 percent for water and 19.5 percent for sewer. There was no way the town was going to get off easy.

At least Pomfret has a better plan than the village moving forward. It has agreed to be a part of the north county water district so rates will stabilize once that system is in place.

Fredonia, on the other hand, will lose Pomfret as a water user and see its deteriorating water system continue to flush more money down the drain.

Pomfret has some pain in its rates today. It will get better for them as part of the regional district. Fredonia’s rate hikes, however, will just keep rising in the future. That pain — for village residents — will be prolonged.
