HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

COLLEGE GRADUATION — This is graduation weekend for both Jamestown Community College and SUNY Fredonia. We wish these students the best as they enter the next phase of their lives. Hopefully some of those ready to enter the marketplace will stick around Chautauqua County and realize what this community has to offer.

STRONGMAN — Congratulations goes out to local native Don Reinhoudt for recently being named one of the top 10 Strongmen of the Century by International Powerlifting Federation. Reinhoudt was actually the only American to make the list. In 1979 he earned the CBS’ World Strongest Man title. During his competitive years, he held 61 world records. Although Reinhoudt has been out of competing for a number of years, it’s great to see him get this honor.

DHS GETS A KENNY — We want to applaud Dunkirk High School for winning Outstanding Costume Design for their musical production of “Little Shop of Horrors” at the annual Kenny Awards at Shea’s, which honors Western New York High School musical productions. Dunkirk was the only Chautauqua County school this year to win in any of the categories and it was the first time Dunkirk has ever won. Good job!

WORST

NO POPS — It’s too bad the Bemus Bay Pops won’t return this year to Chautauqua Lake. Chairman Dan Dalpra announced on the group’s Facebook page that after 20 years in Bemus Bay, the events will not return for 2018. They’ve had a number of outdoor concert events, comedy troupes, outdoor movies, Sunday morning worship services and more. Dalpra wasn’t specific on what happened to end Bemus Bay Pops, but he did say he hopes it will return next year. We’ll see what the future holds.

Starting at $3.50/week.
