Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

PLANT IS OPEN — We are all glad to see AgriAmerica Fruit Products reopening the closed Cliffstar fruit processing facility on Water Street, Fredonia. The plant is expected to create new jobs, not just at the plant, but also for local farmers, who can now sell grapes locally. Good job to county and state officials for helping make this happen.

STEPPING DOWN — We want to salute Fredonia’s Carol Zirkle, who decided not to return as the girls varsity basketball coach. During her 17 years, she’s had four Section VI championships. It will be different when Mark Putney takes over, but that’s OK. Zirkle has had an incredible run and we wish her the best as she cheers from the sidelines.

BILLS VICTORY — After week 1 in the NFL, things were not looking good. Quarterback Nathan Peterman looked awful against Baltimore 47-3. Then a week later with number one draft pick Josh Allen at quarterback, the team still lost by double digits. Going into Minnesota, the Bills were 16-point underdogs. They had the biggest upset of the season winning 27-6. Suddenly a lost season became interesting again. Should the Allen-led Bills win Sunday against Green Bay, they will be fully respected by all NFL teams.

WORST

SUSPENDED TEACHER PAY — Clymer agriculture teacher Scott Aikens has been arrested for alleged possession of child pornography. He’s been suspended but continues to collect his pay. Under New York state law any tenured employee is afforded protections, including salary. It seems like this law needs to be modified. Let the school districts be able to put the pay in a trust and the suspended teachers can get it after a trial should they be found not guilty. But there are certain crimes, like sex and violence, that should prohibit educators from collecting pay when they’re arrested.

Starting at $3.50/week.
