Technology: Taking a break from our phones

Our generation, as well as younger ones, almost always are connected to social media and the world around them through their cell phones. But an interesting experiment took place earlier this month that is worth noting.

In Sarnac Lake, less than 10 miles from Lake Placid, the school district took part in a digital detox. On March 1 a number of students turned in their cellphones in the morning and collected them at the end of the day.

What were the results? “The building was louder, because (students) were talking and socializing in the lunchroom and hallways,” said school English teacher Kelsey Francis.

Another finding that day: more students using resource materials, including dictionaries.

Many of us are guilty of being glued to our phones, but take a respite and keep your head up. You may not know what you’re missing.
