Giving back: Truck happening recalls event

Almost 25 years ago, an annual event involving tractor-trailers were part of a northern Chautauqua County tradition. The happening was called Share A Dream and allowed disabled children to ride around the community in the big rigs.

For some of these children, it was the thrill of a lifetime. “It was everything I ever wanted,” said one participant of his 1995 ride. “The feeling was indescribable.”

Unfortunately, in the early 2000s, the event was discontinued.

This weekend, however, a similar event will take place at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds. The Partners In Kind organization, which has done so much for the community in recent years, is holding the Touch a Truck event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are a $5 donation to PIK of CHQ. Children under 2 are admitted free.

Partners in Kind’s mission is to facilitate charitable efforts and promote acts of kindness in our community. Through service and connection, we are striving to make Chautauqua County whole again. Their efforts are visible on holidays — or in service efforts to the needy that include a recently announced traveling pantry.

Though the event is only two days away, volunteers — and additional trucks — are welcome. For more information, call Joel Biscaro at 673-5055.
