ON THE ROAD Accidents add up in higher heat

Maybe cooler temperatures in the coming days will bring fewer accidents to area roads. Last week, for all intents and purposes, was a trying one.

Last Monday, a State Police car was hit while responding to an accident. Stories of bravery by the construction workers on the New York State Thruway who rushed to the other vehicle’s occupants in the crash to assist are touching. Other incidents, many handled by the Fredonia Fire Department in those previous 24 hours on July 14, make us wonder if just a bit more attention were paid by the motorists that an accident would have been avoided.

Heat can often bring out the worst in us. On recent a weekend morning, as two teens were crossing Main Street in Fredonia, a motorist slammed on his horn to get the pair to move faster. It was not necessary, as pedestrians have the right of way. But it probably made that driver feel better.
