DAMAGE Making quick call for aid

Over the weekend, U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand made a call for a quick response by the federal government in terms of storm damage across New York state that occurred on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

In our region, the greatest damage was done near Dunkirk and Sunset Bay. In the city, the retaining wall took a beating from high waves from 60 mph winds while Sunset Bay recorded some flooding and tree damage that contributed to downed wires.

“Just two weeks ago, our state, from one corner to the other, saw severe damage after being ravaged by heavy rain, flooding and tempestuous winds,” Schumer said. “It is absolutely critical that we get these communities the aid they need and the first step is for FEMA to prioritize this damage and to complete preliminary damage assessments immediately.”

What may be worst for our region was this was just the beginning. Winter is still about a month away.
