DUNKIRK: Dock overhaul worth exploring

Dunkirk and Lake Erie is world renowned for its fishing. This is a destination for the best in walleye and bass.

Earlier this month, the Harbor Commission talked about increasing access to fishing near the City Pier. Currently there are docks to the west, which are in deplorable shape. Zen Olow of the Chautauqua County sports fishery advisory board noted it is an ideal location to get the younger generation interested in the activity.

“I would like to see the possibility of turning that into a fishing platform for disabled people and for youth,” he said. “If it’s feasible, I’d like to see a lift at the end of the dock to be able to lift people who are in wheelchairs onto charter boats and such.”

The city’s greatest potential is at the waters. There have been plenty of improvements focused near the shoreline and at the beaches in recent years.

But the damaged docks in their present state are not only an eyesore, they also present a danger.

There are still plenty of logistics to work out at the site but the commission and Olow have the right idea. Bringing people to the water, especially with a new platform, is one more way to promote the city in the summer.
