SUNDAY SHOUTOUT: Celebrating athletic honors

OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Dunkirk’s Peyton Ahlstrom celebrates after striking out Fredonia’s Trey Swartz for the second out of the bottom of the eighth inning during a CCAA Division 1 West baseball game between Dunkirk and Fredonia, May 17, 2019, at Chestnut Street Field, in Fredonia. Dunkirk won the game, 3-2.

It is one of the unfortunate casualties of the coronavirus. High school athletes, especially the seniors, have suddenly lost out on participating in a major championship contest or a spring season.

Our sports department, headed by Braden Carmen and staffers Christian Storms and Anthony Dolce, continue to highlight honors and achievements for these young adults. Even in our newsroom, despite all that our state and country are facing at this unprecedented time, we continue to keep this segment of the population in our thoughts.

It is why readers have noticed continued coverage — even as the fields and gyms are silent — of these special students. No other senior class — in our area and nation — has been a part of such a disruption.

Somehow, these athletes must be celebrated when this all comes to an end — which it will. We hope that can happen soon.
