FREDONIA: Sour taste over an exit

We hardly got to know outgoing Fredonia Central School Superintendent Jeffrey Sortisio. During his tenure at the high-profile institution, Sortisio like many other school chiefs, was visible at athletic events, major happenings and graduation.

He did, however, never set down roots here.

After being hired in June 2017, Sortisio was met with plenty of controversy. Before him were disputes over a cross-country coach and a separation with a middle school principal.

Both these incidents, publicly, never look good for any leader.

Through it, he persevered and was able to get a major capital project through for a school that desperately needed changes — for both safety and accessibility. Today, Sortisio is headed to Eden Central Schools to lead that district.

School board President Brian Aldrich was kind in his farewell comments to Sortisio in Saturday’s edition. With that said, there’s a lot of work for a school board who just handed Sortisio an extension.

Commitment, however, is sometimes a one-way street.
