MEMORIAL DAY We still must remember

Memorial Day is the traditional beginning of summer. Residents here and around the northeast will likely venture out, take to the grills and gather with family as they always have done.

Heading to services to pay tribute to those who fought for our freedoms, however, is one holiday tradition that will not be the same around the country due to restrictions on gathering.

Around Chautauqua County, there are a number of ceremonies planned. Most notable, at 9 a.m. in Dunkirk, abbreviated services are scheduled at Memorial Park by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council. In Jamestown, a 1 p.m. ceremony will take place at Mall Boulevard and Fairmount Avenue and will be sponsored by the Blue Star Mothers. It also will be broadcast on 1240 AM and 101.3 FM in cooperation with Media One Radio Group and WJTN.

In fighting COVID-19, safety is everything. We urge residents to take a moment and say a prayer for those who sacrificed for the freedoms we in America so cherish.

God bless all who serve as well as our great country.
