SUMMER Nixing festivals fun for no one

The OBSERVER's view

No decision is coming easy, no matter how obvious it appears in regard to the COVID-19 outbreak. Last week, two municipalities decided to cancel Memorial Day parades. First it was Dunkirk and then Forestville followed.

Once those items occurred, other dominoes began to fall. The city’s Blues Festival and its popular Great Lakes Experience were nixed. Even the popular Music on the Pier has canceled its first two weeks of events.

“I know that there are people that wanted to have it, but this is a matter of public safety right now,” said city Mayor Wilfred Rosas. “We’re trying to prevent the spread of the virus. These events draw more people than we’ll be able to control with social distancing.”

Everything that is happening is unpopular. But staying safe — even through the summer — must be the priority.
