FREDONIA: Strong ethics drove Prince

For 30 years, David Prince has served either the town of Pomfret or the village of Fredonia — sometimes both — as judge. He was dedicated to the job and the community he served for all those years.

In fact, Prince’s vehicle was seen at the village hall almost as much as it was in his driveway in recent years. If a warrant — or judge — was needed at a moment’s notice, he always showed up. He ran his courts with respect and honor.

Along the way, he was human. He made mistakes and some enemies. Anyone in a position of power will do that.

But Prince loved what he did — and always believed his decisions could help an individual, especially those who were in front of him for minor offenses and were young adults. On Monday, his letter of resignation came before the Fredonia Village Board. He noted that “due to health issues I’m no longer able to fill the position” and that he “enjoyed his time on the bench.”

Someday, the village and town will pay tribute to his efforts — either through a proclamation or some other bit of recognition.

His final day was officially Friday. His legacy, determination and work ethic, however, will never be forgotten here.
