ROUNDABOUT Project repairs are a long wait

Right before the July 4 holiday, things seemed to be progressing with the roundabout at Routes 20 and 60. Since then, however, work has been at a standstill.

It has been a bit frustrating for motorists, to an extent. Though traffic seems to be moving smoother, the barrels and cones that surround the new traffic pattern do bring a bit of added confusion to drivers when entering the roundabout.

Those items will hopefully be removed soon. According to an OBSERVER article on July 31, drainage work remains a problem.

“The roundabout is already fully functional,” said Joseph Morrissey, director of communications for the state Department of Transportation. “However, a recent storm revealed the need to redesign certain portions of the drainage system to ensure flooding doesn’t happen in this area in the future. We are currently in the process of installing a new drainage structure to better carry storm water from the nearby Fredonia School District campus. That should prevent future occurrences of flooding.”

Morrissey said work is likely to be completed in the fall, which is better than the winter. But the roundabout, which was pushed through by the state despite plenty of dissenting opinions, remains a bumpy proposition for the time being.
