SUNY FREDONIA Hefner’s words of encouragement

The OBSERVER’s View

A new era is beginning at the State University of New York at Fredonia with the presidency of Stephen Kolison. But before he steps in, a familiar face offered a farewell with some upbeat remarks.

In the weekend OBSERVER, outgoing Interim President Dennis Hefner pointed out some significant campus decisions that involve the use of facial coverings on campus and a “FREDStrong” campaign for those who will be staying at dorms. He also thanked community leaders and businesses for their continued support.

Moving forward, Hefner also took a stand on relocating Brooks Memorial Hospital from Dunkirk to the village. “Not only will a new hospital help Brooks to recruit physicians to better serve our region, but will also help attract businesses and employees to our region,” he said. “I have talked to legislators and written to the State Department of Health asking that this critical project move forward as quickly as possible.”

During his earlier 16-year tenure as university president, Hefner served on the hospital board. He understands the issues the troubled financial institution faces.

He also understands leadership and making tough choices. Our community wishes him the best for the future.
