SUNY Fredonia: Hefner filled role admirably

Northern Chautauqua County has been lucky to have had Dr. Dennis Hefner in its corner as for 16 years as president of the State University at Fredonia and another short-term stint as interim university president.

SUNY Fredonia was lucky to have Hefner’s steady hand during the COVID-19 pandemic — existing connections with area business owners surely helped the university be able to offer remote instruction and to function as normally as possible. Students and the larger Fredonia community couldn’t have asked for a better choice as interim president to take the wheel when Dr. Victoria Horvath’s announced her retirement.

Dr. Stephen Kolison Jr. takes over the post Hefner has so ably manned twice. His job has been made much easier by the work of both Horvath and Hefner. We’re sure some things will change, but we hope Kolison is as involved in the community as Hefner and Horvath have been. That community involvement helps SUNY Fredonia remain an integral part of Chautauqua County and, frankly, will make his life easier when tough times come.
