SILVER CREEK: Getting sour over lost festival
We are missing a north county tradition this weekend. As we noted on Tuesday’s front page, the third annual blessing of the grapes, which normally kicks off the Festival of Grapes in Silver Creek, was held that morning.
But what isn’t held is something residents here and across Western New York looked forward to attending. There normally is the grape stomping, vendors, booths and bands with the always colorful Sunday afternoon parade always worth watching.
Of course, the Festival of Grapes is a victim like every other event that was scheduled to happen in 2020. COVID-19 has changed our lives and schedules.
What is worth noting, and remembering, are the members of the grape growing community who have passed away in the last year. They include: Dean E. Martin, Juan Quinones, John L. Edler, Leo Hans, Joseph L. Castiglia, Charles Walter Brennan, Anthony C. Catalano, Howard Allen Sager, Richard M. Dunst, Mary A. Andzel and Miles E. Anthony Sr.
May God bless them and their families.
