Getting giddy over Gateway

Gowanda has reason to be proud. The Gateway Park, located where the world’s largest glue factory called home years ago, has received a clean bill of health — so to speak — from the Environmental Protection Agency.

During an event held at the park last week, officials hailed the removal of the site from the superfund list. “It is a great day for our community to see what can be accomplished when we all work together toward a common goal,” said Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, R-Gowanda.

It has been a long time coming. Before the park took shape, plenty of questions surrounded the land. The site included areas of contaminated soil, which placed it on the Superfund list in 1998. Since then, the village was granted funding to clean up the site.

Today, it is a shining example to what can happen if the municipality and other levels of government are on the same page. It is a true accomplishment.
