School board steals the show

1 min read

Give the Gowanda Board of Education credit for at least one thing: it is remaining transparent to those they serve. During last week's video meeting, there were plenty of interruptions and questionable behavior between members, most notably Janet Vogtli.

To be fair, while Vogtli is the most outspoken. We often wish other elected officials would speak their minds more often. But not letting others finish sentences or making sarcastic remarks is not good government.

With major issues of furloughing employees and a contract extension for Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson on the table, Vogtli was quite animated throughout.

While some items were accomplished, including the idea of furloughs, the toxic environment led to the meeting ending abruptly.

What's most unfortunate is meeting this reflects on the whole school, not just the board. Gowanda's district has done some amazing things during a troubling year. Those accomplishments, not disagreements, need to be applauded.

Starting at /week.
