DUNKIRK DAVE: COVID’s shadow on area tradition

The OBSERVER’s View

A Dunkirk tradition will be very different this year. Groundhog Dunkirk Dave will be coming out on Feb. 2 to see if it sees its shadow as a prediction of a prolonged winter or early spring.

However, it will be done in private. Bob Will, the groundhog’s handler, said COVID-19 is forcing the change.

“Dunkirk Dave will not be able to come out and check his shadow at daybreak, because no masks are available for groundhogs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dave’s handlers want to respect the regulations put in place because of the virus,” Will said. “Some people might get this message and arrive at Dave’s house, but Dunkirk Dave will not be available to observe anywhere.”

Normally, Will’s homestead attracts a crowd — as well as plenty of local media — for the annual happening that has taken place for 53 years. Unfortunately on his big day, Dunkirk Dave will be isolating — just like the rest of us for far too long.
