SPORTS Tipping off the winter season

The OBSERVER's View

After an unprecedented layoff, a number of local schools are beginning their winter sports seasons. It comes with plenty of mixed emotions, that is for sure.

For starters, we’re thrilled the athletes will be getting an opportunity. Memories are made during the years of our youth. There are many that are none better than those that occur on basketball courts or in ice arenas.

On the flip side is some disappointment. Parents and relatives will not be allowed in the gyms to see how the games play out. Those are another set of memories that cannot happen due to concerns over the spreading of COVID-19.

One other thing is certain. This year is a lot tougher on senior athletes. At least with the Class of 2020, there were the crowds and atmosphere.

That will definitely be missing.
