DUNKIRK: Tough decision by fire company

It is definitely a sign of the times. After more than 115 years the end was announced last week for the city of Dunkirk’s Murray Hose 4 Volunteer Fire Co.

Hose 4, as noted by member Bob Henderson, is the last of Dunkirk’s great volunteer fire companies. Over the past years Pioneer Hook & Ladder, Dunkirk Hose Company 1, Citizens Hose Company 2 and Daniel Anson Hose Company 3, formerly Lake City Hose Company 3 have disbanded due to a lack of young firefighting volunteers.

That problem is not just in Dunkirk –it is across the area and nation. The men who decided this month to discontinue the unit were dedicated but just could not continue without any active volunteers.

It was a brave decision — and heartfelt. Our thanks to all those who are committed to the communities they serve — past and present — through volunteer firefighting.
