Summer's heat can be both enjoyable and cruel. Often, when living next to a Great Lake, many take advantage of cooling down on sweltering days without fully realizing the risks.

Early Monday was apparently one more incident of the sort after two youths jumped into the waters from the City Pier after midnight. Only one survived. We offer our condolences and prayers to the family.

Lifelong residents are aware of the dangers from Lake Erie. It is certainly well known near the Barcelona Pier as well as Point Gratiot.

Last year, a swimmer off the point went missing in the city. After a massive search, that individual was found 20 minutes later near the cliffs.

That story -- as scary as it was -- had a happy ending.

Temperatures will be near 90 throughout the week. If heading to the water to cool down, please use caution.

Starting at /week.
