SOCKTOBER Putting best foot forward in donations

What is the most sought out clothing item by those in need? The answer may surprise you, but socks are the most requested item at homeless shelters and other organizations providing essentials for those in need.

Fortunately this year, through the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and a number of area locations from Silver Creek to Ripley that included businesses, wineries, banks and libraries, residents have answered the call. More than 2,000 pairs of socks were collected during the SOCKTOBER drive that is in its second year.

This year, the foundation will be distributing the socks to the Agri-Business Child Development Program, the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County, Chautauqua County Rural Ministry, Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels, Chautauqua County Homeless Coalition, the Outpour Project, St. Gianna Molla Pregnancy Outreach Center, Catholic Charities, and the Dunkirk Mental Health Substance Abuse Clinic. It’s a heart-warming gesture at the holidays that, indeed, has the support of the community.
