FREDONIA: Involve DEC in deer issue

To some Fredonia residents, newborn deer are downright cute. To others, they are a nuisance.

Within the past two months, the issue of what to do with the village’s large herd of deer has been a hot topic at the Village Board meetings. Current trustees seem to be open to bow hunting of the animals to thin the herd.

If this is the case, the agency for the village to work with on the effort is the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation. “If the village is considering a program to reduce deer abundance through a special permit issued by DEC, we would work with them to understand options and potential outcomes,” said Jeremy Hurst, a big game biologist with the agency.

There’s no question there’s a problem with deer in the village. They’re seen in streets, gardens and yards throughout.

So, if the village — and its residents — are so inclined to reduce numbers, especially at a time when the newborns are arriving, have the DEC involved. Everyone needs to understand that there are limits.
