Costs part of beach feature equation

Summer activities in the village of Cassadaga seem to be on the rise. Some of that is due to government involvement while volunteer efforts tied to Citizens for a Better Cassadaga are more likely to be of greater success.

With more visitors coming to the entity of 600 residents, there is concern regarding the beach and its amenities. One of the items being looked at is the bathhouse and what its future may be.

During last month’s Village Board meeting the discussion focused on renovations or a new build. Architect Chris Cooke noted there are reasons to maintain the current structure.

“Existing buildings have less of a standard” he said. “There’s more leeway with things like ramps. … If it’s brand new, there’s no grandfathering. The way around that is to cut the building in half and have two single occupant, unisex bathrooms.”

In other words, a new facility will be bigger bucks — something that will be passed on to residents. That, for all intents and purposes, is the big question in this.

For those seeking some history, look to the horrendous and often dangerous football field in Fredonia that is called the Orange Bowl. A new facility will have to include all the upgrades mandated by the federal and state governments with a large price tag.

Keeping things the way they are — far from perfect and a bit hazardous — also limits the cost.

Starting at $3.50/week.
