DUNKIRK: Names to consider for school sites

Last month, Dunkirk Superintendent Michael Mansfield talked about renaming the buildings in the district where children are currently being educated. Simply put, the present titles have no character.

Four schools have been designated with numbers along while there is an intermediate school and middle and high school location. “We’re reconfiguring. They’re saying if you want to rename them, let’s get going,” Mansfield told the board at the July meeting.

With less than a month until students return, there have been no changes. But if this is going to happen, the board needs to start at least considering some suggestions. We’ll get the ball rolling.

To begin, the late Roosevelt Haynes — a longtime school board member and tireless community advocate — deserves recognition as does “Mr. DHS” John J. Mancuso.

Other suggestions need to be opened up to the community and considered before a formal vote, which could possibly happen during the next school budget in May. That gives leaders and residents some time to consider.
