ATHLETICS Taking shot to grow area youth hockey

More than six years ago, members of the Dunkirk-Fredonia community were celebrating a New York state championship by the Steelers varsity team. On its victorious return from Jamestown’s ice arena that Sunday evening in March, team members received a police escort to Steele Hall Arena where a local celebration could take place.

It was a magical moment, for team members and the organization.

Today, unfortunately, participation is not what it once was. Due in large part to COVID-19, many lost interest while the seasons were shortened and numerous precautions were taking place.

As part of an Eagle Scout initiative, Steeler member Isaac Williams is hoping to change that. Last week, Williams had fliers distributed in Brocton, Cassadaga, Central Christian Academy, Chautauqua Lake, Dunkirk, Forestville, Fredonia, Northern Chautauqua Cathloci School, Pine Valley, Ripley, Silver Creek, and Westfield. In addition, lawn signs are visible throughout the region.

His goal: increase the numbers of youth getting involved with the sport. “I think a lot of people with the organization were really happy with what I’ve done. I don’t think anybody really expected any of this,” he said.

The Northern Chautauqua County Youth Hockey Association has been in existence for more than 35 years. Willliams’ efforts are vital to it remaining an excellent community option in area athletics.
