Birding State adds area to trail options

Jamestown’s Roger Tory Peterson Institute website was way ahead of the state Department of Environmental Conservation. In a news release this weekend, the DEC announced seven new birding trails. Two are in the city — one at Dunkirk Harbor, the other at Point Gratiot.

Those who love to bird are aware of the natural wonders of the location. Accodring to RTPI, the city park’s “geographical position sticking out into the south shore of Lake Erie means that birds heading north during the spring will stop there before or instead of flying over the water.”

Along the harbor are magnificent views as well, whether its waterfowl or those in the skies. “The New York State Birding Trail provides access to exceptional birding and a high-quality, sustainable opportunity to experience nature,” said Basil Seggos, state DEC commissioner. “These seven new sites enhance access to the more than 330 diverse and unique birding opportunities we are so fortunate to have here in New York.”

And some of the best of it is right in our back yard.

Starting at $3.50/week.
