State University of New York Chancellor John King is getting an education the old-fashioned way. He's making a stop at every one of the 64 campuses in the system.
On Monday, he was at both county locations in Jamestown Community College and SUNY Fredonia. King, who formerly served as state education commissioner, seemed genuine when speaking with students about what brought them to their current school and plans for the future.
"It's been great to see the diversity across the SUNY institutions. We want every student to know, there is a place for them at SUNY," King said.
Some may look at what King is doing as just for show. However, there is no question about the concerns regarding the state of higher education. SUNY schools, which once could count on large enrollment numbers in the past, have seen dramatic decreases.
King's visits are all about perspective. Problems are often easy to find. Hearing stories of success -- such as those from Monday at both institutions -- bring a better balance.
