Brocton Another obstacle with volunteers

1 min read

An item in Brocton reaffirms just how tough it is to get community members to assist volunteer fire departments. At a recent Village Board meeting, David Hazelton of the Brocton Fire Co. said the department has had to downgrade its services.

Currently, the longtime and dedicated official said, service has shifted from an advanced life support to a basic life support provider. Of the two advanced life support providers the department used, "one moved and one is just too busy to answer our calls," Hazelton said. "So we'll be backed up by the county."

On Tuesday, did this newspaper mention the reduction that the Legislature approved last month regarding county taxes. Brocton, which has struggled with membership in its department, may want to work with the town of Portland -- possibly merging departments-- to increase membership.

That option has been on the table before, but keeps getting kicked down the road. As well as these entities work together, you would think they could find some common ground on this issue.
