Community Coffee debate shows division

2 min read

Disconnect between the State University of New York at Fredonia and the community can be summed up in one word: Starbucks. Despite the campus having the nationally known coffee chain located in University Commons, many residents here believe that is out of the way -- or an inconvenience.

That's not what this newspaper is saying. That, unfortunately, has been the chatter on the OBSERVER's social media site.

Those who do visit the campus on a regular basis know spring is one of the best times to do so. But there is a sentiment that getting to the coffee shop is an inconvenience.

Maybe that is what has led developers to aim for a new location in the town of Dunkirk at the Tops Plaza. Currently, Planning Board members put the brakes on the proposal due to concerns regarding a drive-through at the building located in the parking lot that currently houses AT&T.

"We'll table it for now. You'll go back to the drawing board, so to say, and we'll be happy to see you again in front of us," Planning Board Chairperson Shari Miller said to David Zuppelli, civil engineer for Benderson Development, last week.

In the meantime, SUNY is open for business -- for students, staff and the community. It's an important engine for this area that almost always welcomes visitors.
